Systems Biology connects life sciences with systems science, with problem solving and understanding of complex biological problems as the central feature. In the systems approach, a biological problem is viewed holistically and systems concepts and methodology are used to provide new insight and understanding. In the last few decades, three major developments have driven the complex systems approach to biological systems study

  • Abundance of data / information from human genome project.
  • Computational advances to handle large model and data and storage.
  • Inability of traditional reductionism paradigm to explain complex biological processes.
The research and practice of Systems Biology at Case requires an interdisciplinary understanding (see figure above)
